About the program

The Center for Biotechnology is Stony Brook University's biomedical commercialization center and a designated Empire State Development Center for Advanced Technology, housed in the Bioengineering Building on campus. It describes itself as a catalyst for the development of new biomedical technologies and emerging companies, bridging discovery and commercialization while training future biomedical leaders. Its work is organized into business development, technology development, workforce development and infrastructure development programs. The center operates the Long Island Bioscience Hub, the Long Island BioMentor Initiative and a BARDA DRIVe accelerator, which provide translational funding, mentoring and technical support to academic and clinical inventors across Long Island institutions including Stony Brook Medicine. Outside companies and startups engage through these accelerator and mentoring programs and through partnerships on funded technology development projects.
