About the program
The University of Utah Center for Medical Innovation, dedicated in 2026 as the James LeVoy Sorenson Center for Medical Innovation, gives clinicians, residents and students a structured path from clinical need to commercialized device. Its flagship Bench to Bedside competition puts interdisciplinary student and clinician teams through a months-long build-and-pitch cycle that ends with a demonstration of working medical technology prototypes, and Bench to Bedside APEX extends support for the strongest teams. The center also runs fellowship and internship tracks in engineering, regulatory affairs and the Hansen Fellowship, staffed by an in-house engineering and regulatory team. Leadership is drawn from the medical device industry, and the center provides prototyping, regulatory strategy and commercialization guidance directly to University of Utah Health innovators.
