Mandate and remit
UI Ventures is the startup and commercialization arm of the University of Iowa Office of Innovation, focused on spinning out companies built on University of Iowa technology, much of it from UI Health Care. Staff evaluate identified clinical needs and technologies, then draw on a network of industry professionals and venture investors to assess market viability, team strength and development stage before advancing a concept toward a company. It serves faculty, staff and graduate students as an internal service, and works with outside entrepreneurs and investors who want to license or build on Iowa technology. The office also runs a Translational Research Incubator and related programs including Nurse Innovators and the Iowa Innovation Leadership Fellows, and is based at the MERGE co-working space in downtown Iowa City.
