What This Program Does

The Biodevice Innovation Pathway is a dedicated research track within UCSF Surgical Innovations for surgery residents who want to build medical technology. It gives residents one to two years of full-time, hands-on experience developing and translating novel devices for unmet clinical needs, spanning device design and prototyping, animal model development, clinical trial participation, startup formation, and regulatory and business strategy. The pathway is open to UCSF surgery residents and to residents in surgical disciplines at other universities. It is co-directed by a pediatric surgeon and a bioengineering faculty member and draws on more than 15 faculty mentors across surgical specialties and bioengineering. Residents work on translational projects that have progressed toward companies and clinical use, which is also the main way outside investors and industry partners engage.
