What This Program Does

The Stanford Mussallem Center for Biodesign (formerly the Byers Center for Biodesign) runs the field-defining Biodesign Innovation Fellowship, a nearly year-long, full-time, multidisciplinary program in which physicians, engineers, designers and business people work in teams on health-technology projects. Fellows are trained in the identify-invent-implement Biodesign process: clinical immersion to observe unmet needs, needs filtering, concept generation, prototyping, IP and regulatory strategy, reimbursement planning and business model development. The center also runs a separate eight-month, part-time Biodesign Faculty Fellowship aimed at Stanford faculty with entrepreneurial ambitions, plus global fellowship programs. Faculty mentorship comes from practicing clinician-inventors and medtech industry veterans, and the curriculum has been exported to biodesign programs worldwide.
