What This Program Does

The Renown Institute for Health Innovation is a joint institute of Renown Health and the Desert Research Institute that integrates personal health data, environmental data and socioeconomic factors to address Nevada's health challenges. Its flagship effort is the Healthy Nevada Project, a population health and genomics study that returns clinical genetic results to participating volunteers, including risk information for heart disease and certain cancers. The institute uses the study cohort to expand access to clinical trials for northern Nevada residents and to build research connections with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. Outside companies engage as research and commercial collaborators on the cohort; reported partners have included Helix, Gilead Sciences and Siemens Healthineers. The institute has also built public-facing tools such as DANA, a life-sized holographic AI avatar that educates the public about genetic testing.
