Mandate and remit
The Acute Care Innovation Center in UCSF's Department of Emergency Medicine develops, tests and scales acute care innovations across what it calls an acute care test bed made up of three distinct emergency departments. Its flagship training arm is the one-year EM Innovation Fellowship, which prepares board-certified or board-eligible emergency physicians to lead in healthcare innovation, human-centered design and system improvement. Fellows carry eight eight-hour attending shifts per month at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital while receiving immersive training in human-centered design, clinical informatics, digital health and implementation science, plus protected time for a leadership curriculum and scholarship. Fellows can take an external certificate program such as MIT's Design Thinking Executive Education or the UCSF Health Data Science Certificate, and complete a capstone project with a sustainability plan and a publication goal. The center works with outside partners on projects run through its emergency department test bed.
