Mandate and remit
The Earl E. Bakken Medical Devices Center is the University of Minnesota's interdisciplinary medical device center within the Institute for Engineering in Medicine, drawing faculty from Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and the College of Science and Engineering. Its flagship Innovation Fellows Program is a full-immersion education and product development program in which cohorts of engineers, scientists and clinicians identify unmet clinical needs, brainstorm, prototype and pursue grant funding for new medical devices. Fellows work alongside University experts and professionals from the Medical Alley medtech ecosystem, and can use the Medical School's Anatomy Bequest Program. The center also operates MedWorx, a prototyping service offering 3D printing and scanning, CAD, segmentation, augmented reality and virtualization to clinicians, researchers and industry collaborators.
