Mandate and remit
Duke's Office for Translation & Commercialization is the university-wide unit that identifies inventions from Duke faculty, graduate students and staff, protects them, and moves them to market through licensing to existing companies or the formation of new ventures. It was created in 2021 by a Duke Board of Trustees initiative that consolidated the former Office of Licensing and Ventures (established in 1986), Duke Capital Partners and the Gilhuly Accelerator Fund into a single 42-person organization. Services include patent and copyright strategy, market and competitive analysis, negotiation of licenses and industry contracts, and entrepreneurial mentoring for faculty founders. Its New Ventures Group provides business planning and investor introductions, Duke Capital Partners is an alumni-led investment network that supplies venture capital and guidance, and the Gilhuly Accelerator Fund pays for late-stage de-risking experiments on Duke technologies. OTC engages outside companies as licensees, sponsored-research and option partners, and through the annual Invented at Duke networking event.
