What This Program Does

The Duke Institute for Health Innovation (DIHI) is Duke Health's central innovation engine, created to catalyze transformative innovations in health and healthcare and to cultivate a community of innovation and entrepreneurship across Duke University and the health enterprise. It organizes its work around three pillars: innovation science and implementation, technology and innovation infrastructure, and workforce training and education. Its core operating model is an annual Innovation Request for Applications (RFA) that competitively funds emerging ideas from Duke faculty, staff, students, trainees and Duke University Health System personnel, with recent cycles prioritizing AI-driven solutions to clinical and operational problems. Funded teams are paired with DIHI's internal data science, design and implementation staff so that prototypes are validated inside live Duke clinical environments rather than in a lab. DIHI engages outside companies as technology and development partners on funded projects and through its work setting norms for clinical AI deployment.
