Mandate and remit
The Health Innovation Lab is a 20,000-plus-square-foot facility at the Duke University School of Nursing, adjacent to Duke University Hospital, that advances nurse-led models of care and translates clinical ideas into practice. It functions as a pipeline for evaluating medical devices, digital health technologies and care delivery models, and has operated as a grant-funded internal accelerator in partnership with Duke Health and the Schools of Engineering and Medicine. In November 2024 Duke University Health System appointed a Chief Nurse Innovation Officer to drive a culture of innovation in nursing practice and act as liaison between Duke Health and the School of Nursing. The same leader directs the Health Innovation Lab. The lab organizes its portfolio around medical devices, digital health and care delivery models.
