Mandate and remit
The Center for Discovery and Innovation (CDI) is Hackensack Meridian Health's translational research center, which the system describes as an academic accelerator embedded inside a health care system rather than a conventional university institute. It opened on May 30, 2019 in a 250,000-square-foot facility on the 116-acre On3 campus in Nutley and Clifton, New Jersey, the former Hoffmann-La Roche site known as the birthplace of interferon. CDI runs on what it calls an agile, incentive-driven model, bringing researchers, practicing clinicians and life sciences companies together to develop new diagnostics, treatments and preventive strategies in cancer, infectious disease, immunology and behavioral and neurocognitive health. It is funded through a mix of federal grants from the NIH and National Cancer Institute, individual and corporate philanthropy, venture philanthropy and venture capital. Outside life sciences companies engage CDI as research collaborators and co-development partners, and the center also serves as the research hub for the adjacent Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine.
