The Elaine Marieb Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation pioneered what it calls the Nurse-Engineer research approach: bidirectional, real-time collaboration in which nurses identify healthcare challenges and engineers help develop, refine and evaluate solutions. The center maintains a formal academic-clinical partnership with Baystate Medical Center, and its joint projects run inside Baystate's clinical units including the emergency department. It is co-directed by faculty from nursing and mechanical/industrial engineering and awards annual pilot grants for nurse-engineer projects.
