VCU TechTransfer and Ventures, also known as Innovation Gateway, is the office responsible for protecting and commercializing inventions and creations from Virginia Commonwealth University and VCU Health. It holds exclusive authority to license university inventions to established companies and to startups, and it manages the full pipeline from invention disclosure through patenting, marketing and deal negotiation. The office runs a Commercialization Fund that provides gap funding to advance selected VCU technologies toward a licensable stage. It maintains a public technology marketplace organized by discipline, covering biomedical, engineering, software, research tools and arts and education assets. Outside companies engage the office as licensees, option holders and industry research collaborators, and entrepreneurs engage it to form VCU spinouts.
Documented successes: Cumulative totals published on the office's own site: 1,978 invention disclosures, 2,521 patents filed, 311 patents issued, 324 licenses and options, more than 90 startups created, 60 new products commercialized, more than $45 million in licensing revenue and 700 industry engagements (no year attached on the page)
