Mandate and remit
West Virginia University created the Office of Innovation and Commercialization in 2024 as a single front door for identifying, protecting and monetizing emerging technologies from across the university, including its health sciences campus and WVU Medicine-affiliated researchers. The office merged what had been separate units: technology transfer, the NSF I-Corps site, student and faculty innovation programs including the Morris L. Hayhurst Launch Lab, and assorted startup support services. It provides intellectual property and licensing services, prototyping and funding resources, and industry partnership development. The office is located in the WVU Innovation Corporation building on the former Mylan/Viatris site and includes federally funded energy incubator space available to startups across the state. Outside companies engage it as licensees, industry research partners and tenants of its incubator space.
