Mandate and remit

What This Program Does

The Center for Innovations in Care Delivery is Massachusetts General Hospital's formal structure for surfacing and developing ideas that originate with front-line nurses and other direct-care staff. Nurses submit clinical problems they encounter at the bedside, and the center pairs them with engineers, researchers, designers, operational leaders, manufacturers and patients to prototype, test, measure and scale solutions. Its signature vehicle is the IDEA (Innovation, Design, Excellence, Awards) program, which awards seed grants and provides months of one-on-one mentoring in human-centered design methodology. The center also anchors MGH's investment in nursing innovation infrastructure through an endowed chair dedicated specifically to nursing innovation. Work developed through the center has moved as far as patenting and clinical trials.
