Mandate and remit

What This Program Does

The Center for Medical Innovation supports Penn State College of Medicine faculty, researchers and learners in moving medical innovations toward commercialization. It works through three service lines: agreements, which safeguard publication rights and intellectual property; innovation education, which provides entrepreneurial training, stakeholder engagement strategy and commercialization guidance; and innovation project support, which supplies seed funding, technology development expertise, business strategy and industry connections. Its two named programs are the Innovation Fellowship, a competitive 12-month non-clinical fellowship for medical students, postdoctoral researchers and graduate students that funds departments so fellows get dedicated innovation time, and the Pathways Program for faculty. Fellowship components include workshops, coaching from innovation staff, industry mentorship, I-Corps customer discovery training and investor pitch preparation. Outside companies engage as industry mentors, licensees and investors through the center's connections.
