Mandate and remit
The Lankenau Institute for Medical Research (LIMR) is Main Line Health's biomedical research institute, founded in 1927 and based at Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. Unlike a conventional academic institute, LIMR operates on what it calls an ACAPRENEURIAL model, in which invention, intellectual property and new company development are the primary goal and new academic knowledge is the secondary one. To execute that model it runs an intellectual property licensing division, a biotech incubator and Lankenau Ventures, its vehicle for forming and supporting companies around LIMR discoveries. Research programs span cancer and immunotherapy, cardiovascular disease drug and device development, autoimmune and gastrointestinal disease, and it operates its own clinical research center so discoveries can be tested in Main Line Health patients. Outside companies engage LIMR as licensees, incubator tenants and clinical trial sponsors.
