Mandate and remit

What This Program Does

OSF HealthCare runs a dedicated Nursing Innovation Lab inside OSF Innovation that develops nurse-led solutions to improve care delivery and nursing workflow. Alongside the lab, OSF launched a Nursing Innovation Fellowship in 2024 for experienced bedside nurses, who continue working two clinical shifts a week while spending the rest of their time on innovation and education work. Fellows are selected through a competitive process requiring four to five years of experience, documented outcomes, a 1,000-word essay, a CNO recommendation and a panel interview, and each is paired with a mentor. The program deliberately builds peer coaches rather than concentrating innovation among executives, on the theory that peers are the most powerful influencers at the point of care. Lab projects include a partnership with the University of Illinois on detecting and mitigating early signs of nurse burnout and intent to leave.
